It’s mid November, and we’ve already had our first (and second) snowfalls, with many more to come. Winters in Central New York can be tough on your home, particularly if you have a deck or patio. Here are some tips on how to make sure your patio is winter-ready.
If you have a concrete paver porch, you probably already know that well-built pavers are designed to withstand the impacts of winter weather. That being said, there are still some things you can do to make sure your paver patio or porch makes it through the winter crack-free.
To protect your paver porch or patio, your summer furniture should be removed from your porch as the winter season approaches.
Heavy items such as outdoor tables, chairs, grills and umbrella stands could cause the area below the pavers to sink during the winter weather, which would lead to an uneven or cracked patio come next spring.
When removing snow from your patio or porch, try to avoid shovels with metal edges, as they could scratch your pavers.
We recommend using a broom to remove the snow from your patio – and don’t forget to remove the leftover ice as well.
Before the next big snowstorm, make sure that you clean up all those pesky fallen leaves and other types of debris that tend to build up in the autumn-time.
Removing leaves before the snowfall sets in will ensure you won’t have to scrape frozen leaves off your deck in the springtime, and will protect your patio floor (whether it’s a wooden or stone patio).
