Summer is here! If you’re like most of us, you’ve spent far too much time indoors this year and it is officially time to celebrate in the sunshine. The best way to do that? A refreshing brew and some great eats on your patio with family, friends…or maybe just a great book.
Before you do that though, it may be time to rethink your patio design. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, you want it to be your own little paradise, right?
We’re here to help you transform your patio into your own private oasis.
Here are 5 things you can do to make your patio the best it can be this summer:
1) Let’s Get Leafy! A simple trick to make any patio pop is to add more vegetation. Sunflowers, lavender, zinnia and rose are a few beautiful summer-friendly flower options. You could also add some edible plants that grow well in the summer months like cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and a variety of herbs to bring both color and function. Not born with the green thumb? Try some succulents. Give your patio a southwestern flare with some agave, assorted cacti, or even aeonium!
2) Fire it up! A great way to spark that summer spirit on your patio? Put a little heat in it. Spruce up your patio with a grill for cooking your favorite foods. Or, better yet, build an outdoor fireplace to nurture that post-food glow and stave off the nighttime chill. Choose the stone that suits you and create a fire pit that will be the patio centerpiece for years to come. Who says gathering around the fireplace is only for winter? 3) Build it brick by brick. Not too much of a stone kind of guy or gal? Why not try brick? Brick is versatile in color and can be a great option for those who want to pick a more vibrant vibe. Design the patio pavers in patterns to highlight your unique aesthetic.
4) Retain the fun! Want to really make your patio its own world? A great way to do this is through building a retaining wall. Retaining walls literally ‘retain’ the soil behind the wall, making your patio separate from the rest of the backyard. You can build it out of stone or brick and remember that you can add curves to create more dimension. It can be a beautiful way to make your patio feel like your own special place away from everything else.
5) Don’t forget to add your personality in! Lights, classy throw pillows, funky furniture, wind chimes, a Gone Fishin’ sign…add in anything that feels like you! Remember, this is your space to feel in touch with what you love. Take the time to make it your favorite place. You deserve it.
